GPS devices have come a long way in the last few years. GPS or Global Postioning Sytems come standard in many new vehicles, helping you find various locations. But these are not the only types of GPS out there. What you see most frequently are the more traditional stand-alone devices that are installed in a variety of vehicles. The GPS systems can be used by just about anyone no matter how technologically challenged they might be.
There are two main types of GPS systems, depending on your needs. The first is what they call a “Real Time” system, the second is a “Passive System”.
The real time system is pretty much exactly what the name indicates, it is the way the device communicates data to the user ‘as it happens’ or in real time. This is the type of system that you would find in your SUV to help you find that business meating your running late for. Some real time systems can even help you find a local restraunt or night club.
While the passive units just stores the data as it happens for you to retrieve later. Some of these Spy GPS units can even integrate with Google maps showing speed, location and time spent at certain locations. The unit stores the data so you can retrieve the info and view it later on your home computer. Some companies install these types to track data about a given vehicle, it’s location, speed, direction etc. These vehicle tracking systems can come in handy for companies that rely on their vehicles, such as trucking or delivery companies, as it allows them to track the vehicles and also get historical data to compare against.
